Apeejay Anand Children's Library which began in the year 1992 is a space familiar and available for all curious young people walking down Park Street. a place to shelter their dreams and wishes.. a series of queer alleyways between the Book shelves to protect their reveries and an open invitation to their towering thoughts. The library was specially designed and founded to accommodate and cater to the needs of the lesser favoured children along with the others. It has always been a happy place for them buzzing with activities and happenings. Apeejay Schools, Kolkata had been a friendly associate to the wonderful little room of creativity from its time of inception. Apart from using the Library facility, the students and the faculty have used it as a potential cauldron of venturing their socio-cultural aesthetic skills. The library organizes activities, training programme and workshops for the slum children in regular intervals. Reputed trainers and star performers volunteer to offer such trainings. Shaimak Davar, Rudraprasad Sengupta, Alokananda Datta, Shaoili Mitra, Shuvaprasanna and more such celebrated artists have shared the space with the Library Kids. The school students are there on every Monday with their 'Each one Teach one' programme with these slum children wherein they have volunteered to assist them with their learning. This is a sustainable programme which includes a sponsoring of an underprivileged child to the main school. We also have special performances in this small intimate space.
The library was named after Anand Paul, who met with a fatal accident at a very early age on the 26th of February; a day when the Library organizes for a Grand Art Mela for Children. It is a well known city event where many premier mainstream schools participate along with the other institutions and organizations dealing with children.
We have refurbished the entire space and its surroundings to make it more vibrant, warm and welcoming. It is a total overhauling of the space with a special performing stage and interesting art work all over.
The space was inaugurate on the 8 th of September 2009 at 5.30 pm. The special guests present for the occasion were Mr. C V Muralidhar, IPS, IG, BSF Eastern Zone, Mr. Amit Choudhuri a noted Novelist and musician.
The event started with an interesting presentation by the library children (underprivileged children from the Mullick Bazar slums) exploring their emotional and social attachment with the library space. The student volunteers of 'each one teach one' programme guided them to design it. Then Ms. Chatterjee, Principal and Administrator, Apeejay Schools , Kolkata welcomed the guest and spoke briefly about the Library activities and the mission to refurbish the space with a new stage. Mr. Muralidhar spoke wonderfully about the Library. A chorus song by the Library children and the main school children followed the presentation. Then there was a formal felicitation for the special guests and then Mr. Choudhuri shared his thoughts about libraries and got nostalgic remembering his own school library. There after we had four dance performances by the Library and the school children. The programme ended with a vote of thanks followed by the National Anthem.. The parents of the participating children from the slums and the school parents were also present. Librarians and students from three premier schools in Kolkata were also present for the event. The children participating in the event were also gifted Goody bags. The programme ended with lot of hopes and dreams that were seeded into the eyes of those little children from the slums.
Following the footsteps of Apeejay Anand Children’s library, Park Street, the school library in Salt Lake also launched programmes to create space for learning and fun with the underprivileged children of the locality from the year 2010. Both these libraries are functioning at three levels catering to the regular school students, the special underprivileged children and to the local community.
