Introduction

At Apeejay School Salt Lake , inclusivity is at the heart of our educational philosophy. Access to education is the term for differently abled students refers to the means which school policy, process and practice will ensure that students have equitable opportunities to benefit from their educational experiences with a holistic approach. It is a critical component to achieve inclusion in our schools. The commitment to being an inclusive school is both a passion and a focus for every member in the organization, stemming from the Chairman, the CEO, through the Principals, to the teaching and non-teaching staff. It is a cohesive part of developing empathy through diversity.

Our Commitment
  1. Apeejay School Salt Lake is committed to the inclusion of differently abled students. The specially designed practices and guidelines explain how the school will fulfill its commitment to inclusive education. It will provide clear and consistent information about the procedures to be followed and expected practice and provisions.
  2. We examine our curriculum and teaching practices as necessary to ensure that we are effective in reaching every student. Our teachers assess progress regularly and work along with the inclusion team to enable each and every child to achieve at their best.
  3.  A multi-tired support system for targeted support is a modern and need based support plan to cater each learner with their diverse needs.
  4. Our School especially focuses on co-curricular activities which leads to improved academic performance, multicultural awareness, cognitive development, psychological well-being, and leadership development. Our School establishes a clear and consistent approach to ensuring full or maximum participation of differently abled students in all co-curricular activities, promoting their holistic development.
  5. Our School is equipped with trained special education teachers, counsellors and teaching learning aids to understand and support the diverse needs of students.
  6. Inclusive education training and professional development designed and delivered with inputs from diverse stakeholders to give a stronger sense of reality to teachers’ learning experiences.
  7. Implement co-teaching models where special education teachers and general education teachers work together to support students in both the resource room and mainstream classrooms.
  8. We ensure training programs for our teachers to recognize and to understand the range of needs and diverse learning styles among our students to build and sustain an inclusive classroom.
  9. Inclusion is a practice which requires empathy and right approach to establish true inclusion we prepare our children to develop respectful and empathetic attitude through regular sensitization programs in mainstream classes.
Inclusion policies & practices: 

Creating a barrier-free, accessible infrastructure and environment in school is crucial for ensuring that all students, regardless of their abilities, can fully participate in scholastics and co-scholastic activities and feel included in the school community. To support this, the school has the infrastructure and other resources below:

  • A Resource Room is a specialized space within a school designed to provide additional support and accommodations to students with various learning needs. It serves as a dedicated environment where students can receive individualized instruction, access specialized resources, and benefit from tailored interventions.
  • A Sensory Room is a specially designed space that provides a range of sensory experiences to help individuals with sensory processing issues or other developmental disabilities. In an inclusive setup, the primary purpose of a sensory room is to create a safe and calming environment where individuals can regulate their sensory input and develop coping strategies.

Our School has a team of members named ‘the inclusion support team’:

  • Principal
  • Head/leader for differently abled students
  • Nominated mainstream support teacher
  • Nominated inclusion champions (Wellness Warriors)
Role of Special Educators:
  • A team comprises of experienced and competent special educators always thrive to recognize and support differently abled students through right intervention.
  • We affirm the uniqueness of each individual. We honor the uniqueness of each individual and embrace diverse backgrounds, values, and points of view to build a strong, inclusive community and prepare students for lives in a multicultural society.
  • We prepare an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), provides equal access and enables all students to thrive academically, physically, socially, culturally, and emotionally. We examine our curriculum and teaching practices as necessary to ensure that we are effective in reaching every student.
  • We screen, intervene and execute individualized/tailored academic plan in collaboration with parents and teachers starting from the entry level screening through continuous support and care till we meet success.
  • We deliver regular special education class that is need-based and on one to one manner. Where students receive individual attention, care and strategic intervention.
  • Group classes are conducted to foster skill based development. Main focus to give learning scope to develop age/ appropriate socialization and communication skills.
  • Leadership development is our aim. We prepare our students to be responsible through various activities. They take initiatives in events planning.
  • Through specifically designed activities our children develop moral values. To take care of others, to respect individual differences and opinions which strengthen their adjustment ability which ensures ability working in a team.
  • We guide referral therapy services for the differently abled students to channelize their potentiality towards independent work ability.
  • We are the advocates for students’ rights, needs and required support.
  • We identify the difficulties and plan effectively towards Improvement. Hence, examination is conducted by right eligible facilities guided by CBSE where scribe, compensatory time, adult prompter, and other benefits are provided.
  • Frequent parent-teacher meetings are conducted to discuss about needs, abilities and limitations to plan a road map for the differently abled students.
  • A qualitative progress report by respective special educator and counsellor is served twice in an academic year to parents to know the progress, areas of concerns followed with right recommendations regarding their wards.
Role of School Counsellors:

School counselling is a professional service offered in the school for students and their families. School counsellors receive training about psychological concerns that commonly manifest in children and adolescents.

Counselling is designed to facilitate student achievement, improve student behaviour and help students to develop socially and emotionally. Foster a school culture that promotes respect, inclusion and kindness.

The mission is to foster a happy environment where every student must feel recognized, valued and supported. A unique platform is there called the Wellness Warriors (WW), dedicated in creating a happy, comfortable, inspiring, empathetic and resilient school community where wellness and issues are discussed and prioritize resources to thrive mentally, emotionally and academically. WW works with another committee named ABC (Anti Bullying Committee) to recognize the school as a Bullying free Zone.

Counsellors help/support students in various means below:  

  • Counselling sessions are scientifically designed to help students manage emotions, cope with stress and navigate personal challenges.
  • Counsellors help differently abled  students to deal with their attention deficits, emotional issues, behavioral problems through individual counselling sessions.
  • Counselling caters different aspects of students’ development through realistic approach which helps in academic performance, career scopes and regulated emotion.
  • Health and sex education is one of the crucial objective of counselling in adolescence period of students.
  • Advocate students’ well-being and ensure their needs are met within the school environment.
  • Understanding students’ perspectives and building empathy enables counsellors to communicate more effectively, addressing their needs and concerns appropriately.
  • Regular consultation with teachers and other staffs on student issues, offering strategies and interventions to help students to maintain a sustainable environment to succeed.
  • Facilitate peer support groups or mentoring programs where students can discuss their experiences and support each other.

 

PARENTS ARE PARTNERS IN SALTLAKE APEEJAY: 

Apeejay School Saltlake is always connected with the parents of differently abled students. The parents are the partners towards the development of inclusion and it’s practices in school.

Parents are always provided with home plan to follow at home with their wards as per the IEP. The strategies to deal any emotional and behavioral issues of their wards at home.

Parents are guided how to do advocacy for their children as per their rights and laws. We make them aware of the CBSE exemptions, benefits and other Govt. Schemes or any other information and recent research practices.

The parents exchange their thoughts, opinions to the authority and other stakeholders. The parents from the alumni of differently abled students are connected with the school faculties for extended support and sharing successes.

TOGETHER WE CAN: A MODEL TEACHING PRACTICE SUPPORTED BY CONTINUOUS MENTORING:-

Apeejay Saltlake practices collaboration among regular class teachers and special educators. This is the mantra of our success. Special educators and counsellors are there to support each teacher in mainstream classes to manage any issues and to deliver effective teachings to meet diversity. It’s a celebration in Apeejay Saltlake. We believe in team work, hard efforts and Right intervention, it’s a journey along with the parents.

Various workshops, seminars are frequently conducted for teachers and staffs for personal development, knowledge and modern practices to support inclusion.

Overview:

As an inclusive school, Apeejay School Salt Lake has developed the Support for Learning model which is highly responsive to the needs of all learners. This includes: student engagement, those in need of learning support or behavioural support; those who have educational support needs developing from diagnosed difficulties or any psychological issues; those who require extension and enrichment.

As a school, we strongly believe that developing an inclusive environment is the responsibility of every member of school. Our commitment is to provide every student with an equal opportunity to participate and thrive in scholastic and co- scholastic programmes.
