Our Legacy

When we look back at the Apeejay Surrendra Group’s 114 year legacy, evidence clearly shows that it was founded on a firm foundation of business ethics and philanthropy, with Corporate Social Responsibility at the core of its business.

Building on this foundation, the new generation of the Paul family ensures this legacy lives on, in which people form the centre of all social and individual community initiatives; from the differently-abled, to women and children, to supporting the environment through sustainability projects, art and culture, to those employees who have found long-standing careers with us.

Reflecting on our initiatives and partnerships over the years, to support sport for the disabled, to working closely with the Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy that supports rehabilitation and employment for the disabled, the Apeejay Education Trust, which founded its first Apeejay School on Park Street in 1975, ensured through its inclusion policy, the promotion of equity and access, equal opportunity for all students, fostering a supportive learning environment, while encouraging social integration and acceptance. This vision today is the bedrock of the core values in all our schools.

Education has been the Group’s cornerstone to progress, innovation and inclusivity. This has been Apeejay’s commitment – to support and empower the under privileged, the differently-abled and to inspire a new generation of leaders, thinkers and change-makers. What started as The Apeejay School in Park Street in 1975, in Kolkata’s most central district, and in light of its philanthropic work among children, it was in 1991 that the Apeejay Education Trust decided to extend its support, to bring children from underprivileged backgrounds, into the fold of mainstream education. This was when the Trust, made quality education a priority in ‘the most backward district’ of the Chitrakoot region of Madhya Pradesh. Since then in 1991, The Surrendra Paul Gramodaya Vidyalaya, named in memory of our late Chairman Surrendra Paul, “has made qualitative education a possibility in an area where parents are too poor to afford education”. Following close on its heels in 1998, the Apeejay School Salt Lake was built, followed by Apeejay School Bhubaneswar in 2017, and Apeejay School Haldia in 2020, which are all CBSE, purpose built schools…

The Apeejay Institute of Hospitality, is a premier hotel management college located in CBD Belapur, Mumbai. Established in 2007 under the Apeejay Education Trust, the institute offers a 3-year Bachelor Degree programme in Hospitality Studies (Hotel Management) affiliated to the University of Mumbai. The programme is recognized by the Government of Maharashtra and the University Grants Commission.

Apeejay Institute of Hospitality shares its premises with The Park Navi Mumbai and is under the aegis of Apeejay Surrendra Park Hotels. It is the center of learning for the group’s Management Training Programme, Executive Training Programmes, Professional Development Programmes, and consultancy projects for the hospitality industry.

The Paul Foundation, instituted in 2001, affirmed the Group’s belief that education is the key to building a new future. The institute honed in on the search for talented young people to pursue their goals of excellence. The result of this exercise was beneficial to 61 young scholars, who from 2001 to 2008, benefitted from the scholarships.

When the Paul Foundation decided to suspend these scholarships in 2008, the Anand Paul Education Support Programme (APESP) was launched in 2010, having as its main objective, to identify and support children from the poorest areas around Park Street and to get them back into school. Under this programme, education centres were opened in local clubs and community halls, with the support of NGOs like Cini Asha and Focus.

What began as a Centennial theme, “My Anand Library….My Home,”, bringing support to children from the underprivileged sections of society, the Apeejay Anand Children’s Library, was born in 1992, which first started at the Apeejay School Park Street in 1992, extended to the Apeejay Schools in Salt Lake and Bhubaneswar, and now has 21 libraries around the country, including one each in a tram and boat . The schools’ library doors are open every day after school hours, with teachers giving up their time to teach children from the poorest sections of society in English, Computers and the Vernacular, apart from supporting them in extra-curricular activities like Dance, Music, Art, Yoga and Sports

The Apeejay Kolkata, Literary Festival (AKLF), which started as voluntary book-sharing platforms, extended the act during the Group’s Centennial celebrations through its retail chain Oxford Book Stores in 2010. AKLF celebrates literature year after year and features discussions with authors, poets, journalists and other creative minds from Kolkata, India and around the world. Stemming from this, the Oxford Junior Literature Festival (OJLF); a children’s segment, attracts students from schools around the city to meet and interact with authors and writers from across the city at the Oxford Book Stores, and to listen to stories read by the authors themselves.

The Anand Art Mela, initiated in 1992, celebrating the birthday of the late Anand Paul, reaches out to the children of Kolkata, through the magic of colour. The uniqueness of the Anand Art Mela, which is held ritualistically every year, is when children from the Apeejay Anand Children’s Library and NGOs across the city, join hands with students from premier schools to convert their ideas and dreams into themed paintings.

Instituted under the aegis of The Telegraph Education Foundation by Apeejay Trust in 2006, The Anand Paul Memorial Award for Social Service is an annual award, presented to a school deeply committed to making a difference in society, while the Surrendra Paul Memorial Award for Courage is given each year to a student who has fought the odds, faced challenges and won.

Deeply committed to the happiness of its employees, The Apeejay Group Long Service Awards (LSAs), was instituted in 2010. The structure of the rewards for long service, are the same for everyone…from the office boy who serves our tea, to the CEO of the company. The awards have continued in all our business locations across the country and in each of our schools. The ceremony runs into hours of fun, nostalgia and entertainment, touching the hearts of thousands of our employes and their families.
